A vowed Promise
By: SmurffyGal/SmurfetteThe crackling fire and the chirping of crickets was all you could hear in the small makeshift camp. Everyone that surrounded the camp were fast asleep, except for one member of the group, a half demon named, Inuyasha.
Perched up on the highest branch in a tree, with his hands behind his head; Inuyasha gazed up at the starry filled sky from the canopy of leaves.
Closing his eyes for a moment, bored of watching the twinkling dots, he sighed. Removing his hands from behind his head and placing them into his over-sized red sleeves, the half demon gazed down at his sleeping comrades below. Leaning and sleeping against the said tree was a monk, by the name of Miroku. ‘Lecherous monk!’ The red clad member snorted to himself in thought, seeing a glowing hand print that was left on his right cheek.
Too which the red print was provided by a woman demon slayer, after Miroku had groped her bottom earlier that evening. A meter away and keeping her distance from the said ‘lecherous monk’ was the demon slayer herself, named Sango. Curled up next to her transformed neko cat demon, Kirara, they slept contently and peacefully by the glowing fire. His eyes then moved to the last two forms that lay on the opposite side of the fire and a small smile graced his features at the sight.
Lying in a sleeping bag, a small fox demon child, by the name of Shippo, was curled up by the neck of a sleeping girl. A girl from the future...
A girl named Kagome.
But all too soon, his smile faded away, regretfully exhaling and slid his gazed upward as he looked up at the dotted sky once more. Memories of the past, flooded his mind on how he looked and treated Kagome from the beginning.
Being a reincarnate of his fallen and now revived love, Kikyo, Inuyasha took a grudge against the said girl by calling her names and who; both in turn would bicker at each other for silly reasons.
But, after knowing her more afterward, he saw who Kagome really was.
What troubled him so too was that, Inuyasha, would have never thought of trusting, befriending, or even love another after Kikyo.
Somehow, all that was thrown away, when Kagome came into his world.
She trusted him, befriended him and even loved him just the way he was in her eyes.
After hearing a movement form below, Inuyasha's thoughts were interrupted, seeing Kagome stir and sighing in her sleep.
Deciding, Inuayasha jumped down, not even making a sound, as he walked to the slumbering twosome who had caught his attention many times that night.
Kneeling next to them, his eyes took refuge on Kagome's delicate features.
Hearing her littlest whimper, the young half demon only then wanted to feel her soft cheek against his own fingers. Raising his callused hand, Inuyasha stopped half way, but stopped. Dropping his hand, he looked away and pondered the 'what if's' if he did the action.
What if she woke up from his touch? Would she be mad if he stole one moment of her softness? Thoughts whirled within his mind as his eyes focused back on her serene, delicate face while she slept.Putting those damn thoughts aside, on what she would have said or done, his hand rose again, growing closer and closer. Inch by inch from her face until…Pop! Flicking his ear in the direction of the crackling fire and popping embers, the moment was thwarted, making him jerk his hand away once again. Stirring from the sound, the sleeping girl opened her eyes, blinked a few times as she met a red clad figure before her.“Inu-Inuyasha?” She whispered.
“Shhh, it’s alright Kagome. Go back to sleep. I came to check up on you after I heard a noise.” He lied. “Was it a demon?” Sensing her fear, Inuyasha took upon that moment to raise his hand once more and this time, making contact. Cupping her soft cheek with his calloused hand.
With wide eyes, mouth slightly parted and a blush that was formed on her cheeks, Kagome wondered what had possessed the half demon she loved so suddenly; while he caressed her face soothingly. “What ever it was, I think I scared it away when I made movement. No need to worry, I’ll watch over you while you sleep, Kagome. ” He whispered brushing his thumb over her softness, one final time before his hand fell from her smooth visage. Feeling that he always kept his words of keeping her safe, Kagome smiled. Wanting to show her gratitude and love for him, she raised one of her own hands from underneath her bedding and caressed his face in return. “Thank you, Inuyasha. Good night.” Blushing from her soft brush of her fingers, Inuyasha swallowed the lump in his throat before he breathe, "G-good night...Kagome."Withdrawing her hand and smiling, Kagome, settled into her sleeping bag, with the small fox, who cuddled closer once again.
When her breathing evened out and seeing she was fast asleep, Inuyasha rose from his kneeling position and walked back to his tree.
Intending to jump and settling himself for the rest of the night, the red clad half demon turned to looked back at Kagome's sleeping form.
Touching his cheek, which still tingled from the soft touch of her fingers, Inuyasha was soon by her side in a heart beat.
With Kagome's content sleeping face before him, thoughts of a promise, which Inuyasha made long ago to Kikyo were soon broken.
Taking precaution as to not wake her; Inuyasha then bent down, slowly, pressing his lips in a small whisper of a kiss to Kagome's soft ones.
Declaring, and vowing a promise to the slumbering girl;
And this time... intending to keep it...
‘I promise, Kagome... I’ll always protect you... and eventually, I’ll tell you one day…that I'll stay by your side...forever.'
The End.
